When Will the Elder Scrolls 6 Be Released?

Skyrim – just the name invokes images of huge countryside maps, shooting fireballs and magic through your hands, hunting down dragons, and conversations with hundreds of NPCs that contribute to an intricate storyline.

Skyrim is one of the best open-world role-playing games to be ever made, and just a quick Google search will show you that not many games have achieved the kind of ratings this game has.

With a collection of several ‘Game of the Year’ awards under its belt, this fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series left gamers all over the world wanting more. Can you believe that this game came out 9 years ago? That’s right, the main version of TES 5 was launched in 2011, with add-ons being launched in 2012.

When Will the Elder Scrolls 6 Be Released?

History

Bethesda released the first TES game in 1994, called The Elder Scrolls: Arena. The company, which mainly focused on sporting content, shifted to a more role-playing and combat-based gaming experience with TES 1.

They continued to release new games throughout the years, with four main installments and several add-ons, as well as online versions. This will give you a brief timeline of when the main games were released.

  • The Elder Scrolls I: Arena (1994)
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996)
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002)
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

As you can see, this is the longest Bethesda has made us wait for a new main installation of a TES game. Following Rockstar’s footsteps of keeping a game’s legacy alive and making players stay hooked to the game (GTA V, anyone?), Bethesda consistently put out online versions of the game to keep interest levels high.

But after 9 long years, people are beginning to ask the real question: When are we getting The Elder Scrolls VI?

News On TES VI

Let’s get this out of the way: We shouldn’t expect TES VI to be out anytime soon. Bethesda director Todd Howard has specifically mentioned that the company will only be releasing it after Starfield. Basically, we know it’s in the works.

This information has been around for two years now, as Bethesda unraveled a teaser trailer at E3 in 2018. Since then, there has been no new update. Director Todd Howard however has given us some more information about the game in an interview with IGN.

He has said that instead of working on multiple projects simultaneously, it’s better for the developers to finish the projects they’re working on. This was specifically concerning Fallout and TES games being released one after the other.

Considering that Starfield has been announced and is actively being worked on, and the fact that we know that it will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox X. So we know for a fact that this will not be a next-gen console game, and we can expect a release date for Starfield around 2021.

Implications

To put it across fairly, there just isn’t enough information to be able to pinpoint an exact date on when we’ll be blessed with the new game. We don’t even have a name for the game yet.

But if history and trends are to be believed, we are looking at at least a two-year wait after the release of Starfield, pushing the release to sometime in 2023

For now, we will have to replay our favorite TES titles and take maximum advantage of the new options the online world has opened up. A long wait awaits us.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, we know that whatever Bethesda will put out, they will deliver. In the past, they have always learned from the reviews and made the next installments better. And when the unnamed new game comes out, we should certainly hope to get some gaming greatness.
